If you have been struggling in your travel business (or any endeavor) and have not had much success, it is likely that you have a belief system that does not support your goals.
As Henry Ford famously said: “Whether you think you can, or you think you can't--you're right.”
You may have been unconsciously attracting what you do not want. All the effort in the world will not get you to your goals if your subconscious beliefs are sabotaging your success. Of course, you are not aware that your subconscious is running the show. You may even attribute it to outside influences that are out of your control. Money is basic to our well-being. Without it you would be living on the street. As Zig Ziglar says, “Money isn't the most important thing in life, but it's reasonably close to oxygen on the ‘gotta have it’ scale.” Yet, we get mixed messages when it comes to money. So, let us take a closer look at what may be going on.
In childhood, your mind was programmed by your family, society, friends, teachers, TV and more. These handed down beliefs could be getting in the way of what you want. The beliefs that were formed in your childhood you took into adulthood and they shaped your life. The subconscious mind adapted these beliefs as “The Truth” with no examination, and they have now become so familiar that they are invisible to you. It is likely that you have never questioned if these beliefs are true or not. The kicker is that they are not even your beliefs! They are the beliefs that have been passed down from your parents and mentors which were passed down to them by their parents and going back generations.
Since the mind wants to stick to what is familiar and stay away from what is unfamiliar, you may feel pushback when a new idea is presented. However, you can literally reprogram your mind. First identify that some beliefs may be holding you back, then question if these beliefs are true, and then reprogram your mind to better support your goals (more about this later). As an example, my parents believed that money was the root of all evil and rich people got their money by being dishonest. When I uncovered my beliefs and examined them, I realized that while there certainly some rich people that are greedy and dishonest but there are also poor people that are also like that! I then wondered what would be possible with an abundance of money. When I looked at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, I realized that with a lot of money you can take on big world problems such as poverty – exactly the opposite of evil! Money is a tool, and your beliefs are the driver behind the tool. The question is - do you want to be Mario Andretti or a little old lady white-knuckling the steering wheel?
Look at these statements and see which seem to ring “true” to you:

Look at these statements and see which seem to ring “true” to you:
- Money is the root of all evil.
- Most successful agents probably did something bad or dishonest to be successful.
- Realistically, chances are I will never make the amount of money that I want to.
- Getting high commission sales is a matter of luck
- Putting together groups is a lot of work and will not allow much time for anything else in life.
- I am not particularly good around money and finances.
- If I don’t succeed, I will feel like a failure.
- This just is not the right time for me to start “going for it”. It is difficult to be successful these days.
- Money is not really that important.
- It takes money to make money.
- I am not smart or intelligent enough to become successful.

- I am not a strong leader. I would not make a good host on a trip.
- If I ask for help, people will think I am weak.
- I feel uncomfortable getting a high commission with people I know and like.
Now let’s look at some of the beliefs that would better support your goals:
- Money is a tool that can be used for good or bad. The more money I have the more I can use money to support the things that are important to me.
- I can learn ways to be successful selling travel where my clients get a great value and I make a high commission. I create trips that are a win for everyone.
- There are proven systems available to me to be able to become create a highly successful business selling lucrative travel.
- Putting together groups is much easier and more lucrative than selling one trip at a time allowing me more time for other things in my life.
- Handling money is something that I can easily learn because I understand that if I don’t handle money, money will handle me.
- If I try something and it doesn’t work, I will adjust what I am doing until I uncover what works. I will continually tweak what I do to hone my success.
- Even though times are challenging right now there are always opportunities available
- Money gives me choices
- It is possible to find ways to create groups without a lot of money
- I have what it takes to succeed. I concentrate on past wins and keep building
- When I promote travel to my client’s I am making their dreams as well as mine come true.
- Hosting people on trips is fun and creates friendships. Clients and friends understand that the knowledge I have acquired is helpful when traveling but they do not expect me to be perfect.
- When I ask for help, I am making use of a supportive team. After all, brainstorming generates more solutions than going it alone.
- I create lucrative sales by providing people with experiences and value that they can’t get for themselves. Therefore, people I know are my best supporters
- I learned from Harv Eker, a trainer who is a self-made millionaire, to write down a declaration, put your hand on your heart, and repeat it 3 x a day every day. The key is to repeat it every day with feeling until you believe it. Your subconscious cannot tell the difference between what is real and what is not so by creating declarations that are in the present tense, while adding feeling, your subconscious will believe it as “The Truth”
- In addition, celebrate your successes no mater how small. Many people are perfectionists and beat themselves up when plans don’t go exactly as expected. Celebrate the smallest successes. Adapt and alter your project to something that work better. Think of progress like sailing a boat. You rarely go in a straight line but in a forward yet zig zag fashion until your goal is reached.
- Study and copy successful people. Keep looking at and opening up to new ways of doing things from successful people. Look at your competition and study what they are doing right. Afterall, you don’t have to create everything from scratch. Take existing ideas that work and make them your own by adding to them your personal touches. That is how progress is made.
